Story line:

Rocket Singh is quite relatable in recent times. Half the day one gets uncalled-for calls from salesmen wanting to sell us products from the world. And in the other half almost every employee in any organization dreams of starting his own company like his workplace. Rocket Singh combines these common-man conflicts to come up with a compelling narrative.

Harpreet Singh Bedi (Ranbir Kapoor) has always been a below average student and post graduation he desires to be a salesman. He joins as a trainee in a company that sells computers but goofs up in an early deal that invites him abuse by bosses and ridicule by colleagues. Relegated to his desk, Harpreet is restricted from going on field and realizes that his ideologies are not in sync with the so-called professionals of today. Soon he thinks of a way to get even with his boss Puri (Manish Chaudhary) and starts his own secret sales and service agency while continuing to work in his existing company.

Though not designed likewise, Rocket Singh kinda starts where Wake Up Sid ends. The protagonist has just completed his graduation, has gained a sense of responsibility and is all raring to go in life. Ranbir Kapoor graduates both in terms of his character and as an actor.

When the film is in the hands of a smart writer and skilful director, it can never go wrong. Rocket Singh has the correct combo of writer Jaideep Sahni and director Shimit Amin who team again to come up with another winner after Chak De India. Jaideep Sahni works towards sketching every character to real-life precision. And though these characters are extremely ambitious in pulling off clandestine commerce right under the eye of their boss, Sahni doesn’t make the screenplay look larger-than-life at any point.

The trademark elements of Sahni’s scripting style can be sensed in the writing of Rocket Singh as well. On the lines of the team-building of Chak De India, Harpreet puts together a team for his undercover company. And like the ethical conning in Khosla Ka Ghosla, this team also tricks its competitor company, where interestingly they are employed. The detailing towards establishing the protagonist’s changing conflicts comes out convincingly in the screenplay. The dialogues are wonderfully effective with a witty punch in every line and a non-preachy management mantra in another.

While any sales person or an average office executive can effortlessly identify with the setting of the film, director Shimit Amin doesn’t restrict the audience till them. He works more towards the human angle giving the film a universal appeal, while retaining its office authenticity. Harpreet’s field induction scene is smart and sassy. The pre-interval scene where boss Puri mocks and degrades Harpreet for his mess up is poignant. Like in Chak De India, Shimit thankfully refrains from the regular Bollywood tendency to liberally work out a parallel romance track. There is a love story which is kept short-n-sweet and is briskly defined through a transition song.

Salim-Sulaiman limit the soundtrack to a couple of tracks which are either employed as transition songs or played in background, thereby not interrupting the flow of the film. Vikash Anshum’s cinematography and Arindam Ghatak’s editing are just perfect. Niharika Khan dresses Ranbir Kapoor in formal pastel clothing and colourful turbans making him look like the coolest Sardar ever on Indian screen.

Rocket Singh offers Ranbir Kapoor immense range, as the character takes lead over the actor. He is perfectly poised in one of his best performances so far. The character-driven story doesn’t let Ranbir overshadow the supporting cast, each of who gets good scope. D Santosh is hilarious as the hardware service agent and gets the best repartees. Mukesh Bhatt as the office clerk is funny. Navin Kaushik as Nitin, the senior sales manager reminds of Raghu from Roadies for his cheekiness and is brilliant. Manish Chaudhary in a confident-personified act comes across as one of the most efficient negative leads in recent times. The one item-number-old Gauhar Khan surprises with an amazing natural performance and is a talent to look forward to. Shazahn Padamsee is charming but remains almost parallel to the plot and doesn’t get much scope.

A line from the film states, “Risk toh Spiderman ko bhi lena padta hai, main toh phir bhi Salesman hoon” (Even Spiderman has to take risk, I am just a Salesman). The makers have taken as much risk to sell a not-so-regular story to the audiences. And it has paid off pretty well.

Without a doubt Amitabh Bachchan deserves all the awards and accolades for his portrayal of Auro. With a new voice, face and body language here is one character of Big B which will undoubtedly stand out in his filmography for being delightfully different and charmingly childish.

.Vidya Balan’s maternal chemistry and her jelling up with Auro being the single mother is truly applaud able. You will be touched with the sting of emotion. Abhishek Bachchan puts in a poised performance as a politician and pal-turned-Paa to Auro. Pratik Katare as Auro’s schoolmate Vishnu gets the funniest one-liners. Arundhati Nag as the grandmother puts in a confident act. Even Paresh Rawal is pleasant in his extended special appearance, much charming that his recent full-length, blown-out, loud comic acts.

The movie is fun filled at the same time it will touch your heart. It has got a story whose messahe is very loud “progeria”. But Balki, the Director of the film has tried to bring out other angle as well like over-enthusiastic media, use of condoms, abortion and the political angle in, he does not sound preachy with it.

So what are you waiting for folks? Go book your ticket now. If you are trying for Sunday I am sure you have to stand in queue for hours! We just hope that it gets the Oscars nomination and becomes the next Slumdog Millionaire. All the very best to the whole unit of PAA.

In De Dana Dan Johnny Lever plays a hitman named Kala. He sits down in a coffee shop and introduces himself to someone: "hello, I’m Kala. The guys says: toh maine kab bola gora hai. This low-IQ, college canteen humour made me laugh, and it is as good as it gets in the film. The movie starts out funny but gradually becomes more and more exhausting. The film sticks to what seems to have become the standard formula for Bollywood comedies.
Many characters with different agendas get together in one location. What follows is misunderstood identities, slaps, Tom and Jerry style chases and cartoonish violence.
You recall Daddy Cool, Do Knot Disturb, All the Best – De Dana Dan is one more from that school of laughter.
Akshay Kumar, the reason this film got made, plays Nitin, a glorified servant who works for someone called Singapore’s Cruella de Ville, playted by Archana Puran Singh. The only thing she loves is money and her dog named Moolchand ji.
Nitin who is poor is desperate and kidnaps the dog hoping to get rich on the ransom but Moolchand ji is smarter.
The dog escapes and the police believe that Nitin is the victim.
There are around 22 characters in the film and soon every one lands up in a hotel. The hotel must have given rooms and shooting premises for free because the camera seems to pan to its name and exterior façade between every shot. And of course, the slaps, chases and violence that I mentioned follow.
Some of this strictly low-brow humour is fun. Akshay, in full throttle, energises the lame scenes and keeps the momentum going for the first half. But in the second, he does a disappearing act.
He gets shut in a cupboard and the film goes into free-fall.
We see Shakti Kapoor attempting to bed Neha Duphia who in turn attempts to bed Vikram Gokhale.
Meanwhile, Johnny Lever is trying to kill the wrong man; lots of money is being tossed around in suitcases, everybody screams and there is a wedding in progress.
The film gets more tedious as the plot gets more convoluted and by the climax, in which everyone floats around as the hotel gets flooded, I could barely keep my eyes open.
The humour is so labored that I felt like someone was beating me to laugh.
And I finally understood why the credits in many Priyadarshan films say filmed by Priyadarshan instead of directed by Priyadarshan. Because there is little sense that someone is actually directing this circus. It feels like the actors are in a free-for all and a camera is filming the chaos.
I’m always happy to revel in pedestrian comedy but De Dana Dan feels more like work than entertainment.

Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani, a comedy set in a comic book universe, is a frustratingly uneven film. Some of it is genuinely funny and delightful and some of it is repetitive, and annoyingly tedious.

But even in its most limp moments, what keeps the film from derailing is its lead pair: Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif. There is such sizzle and beauty and unadulterated charm here that you really can’t look away.

The story, co-written and directed by Raj Kumar Santoshi, is set in a picturesque little town, which seems like a cross between Goa and Ooty.

Specifics are irrelevant because Santoshi isn’t aiming for realism here. This is a cheerfully artificial world, in which Prem, played by Ranbir, lives with his parents.

Prem is a 9th standard drop-out whose main job is being the President of the Happy Club. The happy club hopes to make people happy but mostly its members boast about doing nothing.

Enter Jenny, played by Katrina, a lovely lady with a slightly troubling back-story: she is an orphan and the parents who adopted her are now forcing her into marriage with an obnoxious boy only because he is rich.

Jenny and Prem, who both have a tendency to stammer when they are emotionally wrought, become friends. And Prem, who can’t bring himself to tell her that he loves her, finds himself in the uncomfortable position of trying to get Jenny away from her own wedding so she can get together with her boyfriend, Rahul, who has issues of his own.

In its best moments, Ajab Prem is crackling comedy.

Santoshi keeps it light, fluffy and fun. There is a real sweetness in the scenes in which Prem and Jenny first discover that the other also stammers.

Some of the dialogues sparkle. The trouble is that the film cannot maintain this tone and energy. So, the humour dips and the gags become forced.

At times, the film strains so hard for laughs that it almost feels like the director is beating you with a stick and ordering you to enjoy it. But even here, Ranbir and Katrina don't let up. Of course, he carries the bigger burden.

Ranbir, as the bumbling nerd, is in almost every frame. Watch him in a ball room scene, in which his body won't stay still or at a cop station, hesitantly declaring his affection for Jenny.

Plot:

Lung meets their sifu, Ti Cha (Lee Kwan), the unskilled leader of the Everything Clan. Master Ti offers Lung a lucrative job training his students. Lung makes the mistake of naming the school under the Sien Yi clan name. This comes to the attention of evil kung fu master Yen Ting Hua (Yam Sai-kwoon), who finds and kills Shing's grandfather.

Lung undergoes training from Unicorn (Chan Wai-Lau) and by fighting against the top fighters from rival schools. This boosts the reputation of the school and the scheming Master Ti, but eventually allows Lung to take revenge for his grandfather's murder.

Plot

The plot centers on a young and mischievous Wong Fei Hung (sometimes dubbed as "Freddie Wong"), played by Jackie Chan. He gets into trouble in a variety of ways, including showing up an overbearing assistant kung fu teacher, unknowingly making sexual advances on his own cousin, fighting with his aunt, and beating up the son of an influential man in town. His father disciplines him for this behaviour.

Wong learns that his father has arranged for him to be trained by a kung fu master infamous for crippling his students. He flees from his home in an attempt to escape. Penniless, he stops at an inn and tries to scam a person he thinks to be another patron into offering him a meal. About to leave, he discovers his intended victim to be the inn's owner and has to use kung fu to escape his irate lackeys. Doing so, he drags into the fight an old drunkard who turns out to be his intended teacher: Su Hua Chi, the Drunken Master. (Su Hua Chi is also known as "Beggar So", dubbed in some versions of the film as Sam Seed or So Hi, and played by Yuen Siu Tien.) Su Hua Chi forces Wong into his brutal and rigorous training program.

Wong flees again, only to run into the professional martial artist and assassin Thunderleg (Hwang Jang-Lee). Wong unwisely challenges him to a fight and is soundly defeated and humiliated. He crawls back to Su Hua Chi, now prepared to commit himself to the Drunken Master's kung fu training.

The training resumes, and Wong learns of Su Hua Chi's secret style, a form of Zui Quan called "The Eight Drunken Immortals", after the eight mythological figures that the fighting style emulates. Wong masters the styles of seven of the eight Drunken Immortals, but disregards that of "the Drunken Miss Ho", feeling that hers is an unmanly fighting form.

It is not long before Wong is forced to put his new skills to the test, especially when Thunderleg is contracted by a business rival to assassinate Wong's father. Wong's father is quickly injured by Thunderleg, but Wong and Su Hua Chi arrive. Su Hua Chi promises not to interfere in the fight between Wong and Thunderleg. Wong employs the styles of the first seven Drunken Immortals. Thunderleg's kicking style is outmatched, but he resorts to his secret technique, the Devil's Shadowless Hand, which Wong cannot defeat. Wong confesses that he didn't practice the style of "the Drunken Miss Ho". Su Hua Chi tells Wong to combine the other seven Immortals and create his own version of "the Drunken Miss Ho". Wong does so, discovering his own unique style of Zui Quan, defeating Thunderleg, and becoming the new Drunken Master.

Plot:
A member of a CIA-sponsored multinational black ops special forces unit is on a mission to kidnap several South African scientists working on a highly volatile extraterrestrial compound brought to Earth in a meteorite. The Royal Hong Kong Police Force is planning a major undercover sting called "Operation Boar Hunt" to arrest crime lord Chu Tao (Yuen Chor).

Inspector Chan Ka-Kui (or Kevin Chan in some versions) is part of the operation, along with undercover officers stationed in a shanty town. However, the criminals spot the police and the ensuing car chase cuts through the hillside shanty town, vehicles destroying the shacks and causing large explosions.

Ka-Kui persists in his chase, eventually following on foot as the drug lord attempts to escape in a double-decker bus. Ka Kui catches the bus and initially is able to hang on to it using an umbrella, but is thrown off. He then manages to get in front of the bus and bring it to a halt by threatening to shoot the driver with his service revolver.

Ka-Kui is reprimanded by Superintendent Li for letting the operation get out of hand, but is subsequently presented to the media as a model police officer.

His next assignment is to protect Chu Tao's secretary, Selina Fong (Brigitte Lin), who plans to testify in court about Chu Tao's illegal activities. At first, Selina insists that she does not require protection, but after Ka Kui has a fellow policeman break into her apartment and pose as a knife-wielding murderer, she becomes more cooperative. After Ka-Kui and Selina leave her apartment later that evening, they are attacked by some street thugs, whom Ka-Kui is able to defeat with his martial arts skills, though the fight leaves Selina's car a wreck.

When Ka-Kui arrives at his apartment with Selina, who is only wearing lingerie, he is surprised by his girlfriend, May (Maggie Cheung) and her friends, who are throwing a birthday party for him. May, seeing the scantily-clad Selina, misunderstands and becomes angry with Ka-Kui, shoving the birthday cake into his face. Ka-Kui is later able to explain to May that Selina is a witness, but only after much bumbling and further misunderstanding.

Meanwhile, Selina has discovered that the attack by the man with knife at her apartment was a sham, and so she decides to not cooperate with Ka Kui. She sneaks away while Ka-Kui is sleeping and is not present for the crucial court date the following day.

Though Chu Tao is released on bail, he wants revenge against Ka-Kui. Using a corrupt policeman, Inspector Man (Kam Hing Ying), Chu Tao is able to frame Ka-Kui for the murder of Inspector Man. Now a fugitive cop killer, Ka Kui must try to catch Chu Tao and clear his name.

The action comes to a head in a shopping mall, where Chu Tao has an office. After surviving a murder attempt by Chu Tao's men to ensure her silence, Selina goes to the office to download incriminating data from Chu Tao's computer system. Chu Tao notices that the data is being dumped, and he and his men head to the shopping mall to intervene. Ka-Kui, who's monitoring Chu Tao's activities, follows. In the ensuing fight, Ka-Kui defeats all of Chu Tao's henchmen. The briefcase containing the computer data falls to the ground floor of the mall, but Chu Tao retrieves it. Ka-Kui, at the top floor, leaps off a ledge and grabs a pole wrapped in lightbulbs. He rapidly slides down the pole, smashing through the bulbs, crashing through a glass ceiling, and finally reaching the floor, where he violently apprehends Chu Tao but is held back humorously by his two friends Tak and Kim to stop him from delivering one final kick to Chu Tao.
